Step-by-step: file your return

  1. Gather your papers: W-2s, 1099s, last year's return (you need last year's AGI to sign), Social Security numbers, bank routing and account number for direct deposit.
  2. Find your AGI: it is on line 11 of last year's Form 1040. If this year is similar and it is $89,000 or less, you qualify for IRS Free File Guided Tax.
  3. Pick your option from the table above. If you are 60+, or would like a person to help, book a TCE, VITA or AARP Tax-Aide appointment early (call 800-906-9887 for VITA/TCE, or 888-227-7669 for AARP).
  4. Start from the right website. For Free File, begin at IRS.gov/freefile. Going straight to a company site may put you in a paid product.
  5. Enter everything, then compare the standard deduction with itemizing (the software does this). Check credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.
  6. Look at the price before you file. Watch for add-ons: paying from your refund (TurboTax $40, FreeTaxUSA $24.99), audit defense, faster refund. You can skip them.
  7. E-file and choose direct deposit. The IRS says more than 9 in 10 e-filed refunds arrive in under 21 days.
  8. Save a PDF copy of your return. You will need this year's AGI to file next year.
