Quick Q&A
When is FEDVIP Open Season for 2027 coverage?

Nov. 9 through Dec. 14, 2026. For FEDVIP it ends at 11:59 pm Eastern time on Monday, Dec. 14 (OPM). Changes take effect Jan. 1, 2027. TRICARE.mil lists the same Dec. 14 end date for military families enrolling in FEDVIP; TRICARE's own health plan Open Season ends earlier, on Dec. 8.

How much are FEDVIP premiums going up in 2027?

On average 1.0% for dental and 1.6% for vision, according to OPM. Individual plans differ: some vision options didn't change (BCBS FEP Vision Standard, both VSP options), and some dental rates went down slightly. The finder shows your plan's change.

What is the cheapest FEDVIP dental plan for 2027?

It depends on where you live. Dental premiums vary by rating area. For self only, the lowest 2027 monthly premium outside Puerto Rico is $13.07 (Dominion National - Standard, rating region 1); the highest is $74.71 (EmblemHealth Dental - High). Compare deductibles, annual maximums and waiting rules, not just the premium.

Can military retirees get FEDVIP?

Yes. OPM says retired members of the uniformed services and National Guard/Reserve, including gray-area retirees under 60, and their families can get FEDVIP dental. If they're enrolled in a TRICARE health plan, they can also get FEDVIP vision. Active duty family members enrolled in a TRICARE health plan can get FEDVIP vision only.

Can federal retirees keep FEDVIP?

Yes, if you retire on an immediate annuity or for disability under CSRS, FERS or another federal retirement system. Unlike FEHB, there's no rule that you must have had the coverage for 5 years before retiring. Coverage ends if you take an MRA+10 retirement and postpone your annuity; you can enroll again when the annuity starts (OPM).

Do I have to re-enroll in FEDVIP every year?

No. FEDVIP coverage continues into 2027 if you make no changes (OPM). Only FSAFEDS requires a new election each year. Open Season is when you can enroll, change plans or cancel without a qualifying life event.

Who can't enroll in FEDVIP?

Per OPM: deferred annuitants, per diem employees, former spouses of civilian employees or annuitants, FEHB Temporary Continuation of Coverage enrollees, insurable-interest annuitants who aren't eligible family members, tribal employees, and employees who transfer to an international organization.

Best first step

Use Open Season (Nov. 9 to Dec. 14, 2026) to check your FEDVIP price, even if you plan to keep your plan. Your coverage rolls into 2027 automatically, but dental prices vary a lot by plan and area, and 2027 rates are already posted.

The math:

  • One person in Gallatin, Tenn. (ZIP 37066), self only, monthly: 16 dental options from $22.75 (BCBS FEP Dental - Standard) to $51.24 (Humana Dental - High).
  • That's $273.00 vs $614.88 a year: a $341.88 difference before any dental work.
  • Vision is one national price: $7.28 (Aetna Vision Preferred - Standard) to $14.56 (VSP Vision Care - High) a month for self only.

How we built this: every premium comes from OPM's own 2027 FEDVIP files (dental rates for 21 plan options by rating region, vision rates for 10 options, and the dental rating region chart: 130 rows by state or ZIP prefix), downloaded Oct. 17, 2026. The 2026 comparison uses OPM's 2026 files; OPM's 2027 rating chart is identical to 2026's, so each change compares the same area. Per year = monthly x 12 or biweekly x 26. The finder runs in your browser with the same lookup as the server-side check. No quotes, no personal pricing.
