In Hawaii, the minimum car insurance is 40/80/20: $40,000 per person and $80,000 per crash for injuries you cause, plus $20,000 for property damage. Required coverage: BI & PD Liability, PIP. That's the legal floor; many drivers buy more because a serious crash can cost far more than the minimum pays.
Raised from 20/40/10 for new and renewal policies on or after Jan. 1, 2026 (Hawaii Insurance Division). PIP of at least $10,000 is also required.
BI = bodily injury liability, PD = property damage liability, PIP = personal injury protection, UM/UIM = uninsured/underinsured motorist, MED = medical payments.
