(no state statutory dollar cap; verified Oct. 28, 2026)).
- Is the Dealer Doc Fee Taxed in Florida? Taxable (included in state vehicle sales tax base) (Florida DOR Technical Assistance Advisement 10A-053 and Rule 12A-1.007(1), F.A.C.: a dealer's document-preparation charge that the state doesn't mandate is taxable as part of the vehicle's sales price).
- Government Title & Registration vs. Dealer Add-Ons: Government title and registration fees go directly to the Florida DMV/revenue agency and must be itemized separately. Pre-printed dealer add-ons (nitrogen tires, VIN etching, ceramic coating, LoJack/GPS trackers, dealer prep, or reconditioning fees) are optional dealer profit items—not state-mandated fees.

Updated October 28, 2026: Key Florida statutory rules governing motor vehicle sales tax, discretionary county surtax, and dealer pre-delivery service fees:
- 6% State Sales Tax + County Surtax Cap on First $5,000 (Fla. Stat. § 212.054): Florida levies a 6.0% state sales tax on the net purchase price after full trade-in credit (Fla. Stat. § 212.05), plus county discretionary sales surtax (0.5%–1.5%) which is statutorily capped on the first $5,000 of any motor vehicle purchase ($50 maximum county surtax at a 1% county rate under Fla. - Uncapped Dealer Doc / Pre-Delivery Service Fee ($895–$999 Average — Fla. Best pick for your situation
If you have a car to sell: trade it in at the dealer when the private-sale price is less than $600 higher. Florida gives a trade-in credit, so a $10,000 trade cuts state tax on a $30,000 car from $1,800 to $1,200. If a private buyer would pay more than $10,000 + $600, selling privately comes out ahead.
The math:
- $30,000 car, no trade-in: $1,800 state tax at 6%
- $30,000 car, $10,000 trade-in: $1,200 state tax (trade-in rule: allowed)
- Local county/city tax adds to both; enter yours above.
