Are car rebates taxed? Rebate sales tax by state (2026)
Short answer: it depends on your state. In 27 states (counting D.C.) you pay tax on the car's price before a manufacturer rebate, so a $1,000 rebate doesn't lower your tax. In 20 states the rebate comes off first and you pay less tax. Alaska, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no state vehicle sales tax.
Why it matters: on a dealer quote the rebate line can make the tax look wrong when it's right, or right when it's wrong. Knowing your state's rule lets you check the tax line yourself.
Next step: get an itemized out-the-door quote in writing, then run it through the free Fee Check. It checks the doc fee, add-ons and tax lines for your state.

- Show each manufacturer rebate as its own line on the buyer's order (Texas, Kansas and Missouri require that for the deduction).
- Show the taxable amount and the tax rate used.
- If your state takes the rebate off first, the taxable amount should be the price minus the rebate (and minus your trade-in where your state gives credit).
Rules checked Oct. 21, 2026 against the official state sources linked on each card. Dollar figures are estimates at the statewide rate shown on each card, for a $1,000 rebate; county, city and transit taxes can add more. This is general information, not tax advice. If a rule looks wrong, tell us via corrections.

FAQ
Do you pay sales tax on a car rebate?
It depends on your state. In some states the tax is on the price before a manufacturer rebate, so the rebate does not lower your tax. In others the rebate comes off first. Find your state below; each rule links to the state tax or DMV source.
Is a dealer discount the same as a manufacturer rebate for tax?
Not always. This page covers manufacturer rebates applied at the sale. A dealer's own price cut can be treated differently, so check your state's source and look at how the discount is written on your buyer's order.
How do I check the tax on my quote?
Ask the dealer for an itemized out-the-door quote in writing that lists the selling price, each rebate, the doc fee, add-ons and taxes on separate lines. Then run it through the free Fee Check at /auto/car-deal-checker.
Educational auto deal, sales tax, doc-fee, and loan/lease math only — not legal, tax, or financial advice. Dealerships are independent sellers; verify all out-the-door figures on your written buyer's order before signing.
