Washington Dealer Doc Fee Cap, Registration & Hidden Fee Statutory Guide (2026)

Updated October 28, 2026: Before signing a buyer's order in Washington, separate mandatory state government fees (title, registration, plate, and statutory sales/excise tax) from negotiable dealer-pocketed fees and optional F&I add-ons:

  • 2026 Washington Dealer Doc Fee Limit: $200 (Negotiable, and the dealer must tell you so in writing. Ads must say a fee up to $200 may be added. Controlling authority: RCW 46.70.180(2)).
  • Is the Dealer Doc Fee Taxed in Washington? Not taxed when separately stated on the buyer's order (Washington DOR, Auto dealers industry guide: Miscellaneous (RCW 46.70.180(2)): document service fees are not subject to sales tax (dealers may charge up to $200)).
  • Government Title & Registration vs. Dealer Add-Ons: Government title and registration fees go directly to the Washington DMV/revenue agency and must be itemized separately. Pre-printed dealer add-ons (nitrogen tires, VIN etching, ceramic coating, LoJack/GPS trackers, dealer prep, or reconditioning fees) are optional dealer profit items—not state-mandated fees.

Best pick for your situation

If you have a car to sell: trade it in at the dealer when the private-sale price is less than $700 higher. Washington gives a trade-in credit, so a $10,000 trade cuts state tax on a $30,000 car from $2,100 to $1,400. If a private buyer would pay more than $10,000 + $700, selling privately comes out ahead.

The math:

  • $30,000 car, no trade-in: $2,100 state tax at 7%
  • $30,000 car, $10,000 trade-in: $1,400 state tax (trade-in rule: allowed)
  • Local county/city tax adds to both; enter yours above.
