Business credit cards: which one fits your spending

How we make money (partner links never change a pick)

Type what your business puts on a card each month. See which of 5 popular business cards earns the most after its annual fee, with every cap shown. Below that: how business credit works and how to build it for free.

Key facts

  1. At $5,000 a month, Blue Business Plus comes out ahead ($1,100 a year at 1¢ a point), then Spark Cash Plus ($1,050). Your mix can change that.
  2. Big office supply, internet and phone bills? Ink Business Cash pays 5% on the first $25,000 of them a year.
  3. Business credit is separate from personal credit. D&B's PAYDEX runs 1 to 100 and comes from your suppliers' reports.
  4. An EIN and a D-U-N-S Number are both free. Never pay a website for either.

How to build business credit

  1. Get a free EIN from the IRS so the business has its own tax ID (IRS).
  2. Open a business bank account and keep business money out of your personal account. Compare business checking fees.
  3. Get a free D-U-N-S Number from Dun & Bradstreet (D&B).
  4. Pay suppliers on time or early, and ask them to report to D&B. Unreported payments can't help your score (D&B).
  5. Use one business card for business costs and pay the full balance every month.
  6. Check your business file and fix mistakes. D&B lets you send updates to your business information for free (D&B).

FAQ

What is the best business credit card?

It depends on what you spend. At $5,000 a month in a typical mix, Amex Blue Business Plus earns about $1,100 a year after fees. Heavy office supply, internet and phone spending favors Chase Ink Business Cash; $150,000+ a year favors Capital One Spark Cash Plus because its fee is refunded.

How do I build business credit?

Get a free EIN from the IRS, open a business bank account, get a free D-U-N-S Number from Dun & Bradstreet, pay suppliers on time and ask them to report, and pay a business card in full every month.

What is a PAYDEX score?

Dun & Bradstreet's business payment score, from 1 to 100. A higher number means the business is more likely to pay on time. It comes from payment records suppliers send to D&B.

Does a business credit card affect my personal credit?

It can. Applications usually use your Social Security number and personal credit, and American Express says accepting a card may affect both your personal and business credit scores.
