Payroll software: what it costs for your team

How we make money (partner links never change a pick)

Type how many people you pay. See what each payroll company charges in a year at its regular price, lowest first, with the math shown. Below that: what you owe in employer taxes and what stays your job even with a payroll company.

Key facts

  1. For 5 employees, Patriot Full Service has the lowest list price: $744 a year ($37 + $5 a person each month). Square Payroll is next at $780.
  2. Only paying contractors? Square's contractor-only plan is $6 a person a month. QuickBooks Contractor Payments is $25 a month for up to 20.
  3. “Full-service” means they file and pay your payroll taxes. Patriot Basic ($17 + $4) leaves that to you.
  4. You stay responsible for the taxes. The IRS can still bill you if a payroll company doesn't pay them.
