Gig worker taxes 2026: mileage rate, 1099s and a deduction calculator
Drive, deliver, sell or freelance through an app? That money is self-employment income, and the miles you drive for it can cut your tax. This page has the 2026 IRS mileage rates (they went up on July 1), when you'll get a 1099-K or 1099-NEC, when estimated tax is due, and a calculator for your car deduction and how much self-employment tax it saves.
Runs on your phone; nothing you type is sent anywhere. Enter business miles only (not commuting). Split them by date because the IRS rate changed on July 1, 2026.
5,000 business miles before July 1 and 5,000 after, plus $200 of parking and tolls: $3,625 + $3,800 + $200 = $7,625 car deduction. On $30,000 of gig income that leaves about $22,375 profit and $3,161 of self-employment tax, about $1,077 less than with no car deduction ($4,239).
Started driving in July: 12,000 business miles at 76 cents = $9,120. With $25,000 of income and $1,500 of phone and supply costs, profit is about $14,380 and self-employment tax about $2,032.
Car costs: the rules that trip people up
Two methods. The standard mileage rate, or actual expenses (gas, oil, repairs, tires, insurance, registration, depreciation or lease payments) times your business-use share. If you qualify for both, the IRS suggests figuring both before you choose (Topic 510).
First-year rule. To use the standard rate on a car you own, choose it in the first year the car is used in your business; later you can switch. For a leased car, picking the standard rate means using it for the whole lease (Topic 510).
Parking and tolls for business trips are deductible on top of either method (Topic 510).
Commuting isn't deductible. Driving between home and your main or regular place of work is personal, no matter how far; trips from home to a temporary work location in the same business can count (Pub. 463).
Keep a log. Write down each business trip's date, miles and purpose. A log kept weekly counts as a timely kept record (Pub. 463).
Selling the car later? For 2026, 35 cents of each standard-rate mile counts as depreciation and lowers the car's tax basis (Notice 2026-10).
All gig income is taxable, even side or part-time work, cash, property or virtual currency, and even when no 1099 arrives (IRS gig economy tax center).
Forms that do come should arrive by Jan. 31: 1099-K, 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC or a W-2 if you were an employee (IRS). Report gig profit on Schedule C and self-employment tax on Schedule SE.
Estimated tax: generally required if you expect to owe $1,000 or more for 2026 after withholding. If you also have a W-2 job, more withholding on a new Form W-4 can cover gig income instead (IRS). Our W-4 checkup uses your pay stub.
Pay by each due date. If you don't pay enough by a due date, you may owe a penalty even if you're due a refund when you file (IRS estimated tax FAQ). Payment math and the 90%/100%/110% safe harbors: self-employment tax 2026.

What is the 2026 IRS mileage rate for gig drivers?
For business miles in 2026 the IRS rate is 72.5 cents a mile from Jan. 1 through June 30 and 76 cents a mile from July 1 through Dec. 31. The IRS raised it mid-year (Announcement 2026-11) because of higher fuel prices. Use the rate for the date you drove.
Do I have to pay taxes on gig income if I don't get a 1099?
Yes. The IRS says you must report all gig income, even from part-time or side work and even if no Form 1099-K, 1099-NEC or other form was sent to you. You must file a return if your net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more.
When will I get a Form 1099-K?
A payment app or online marketplace must send a Form 1099-K when your payments for goods or services are over $20,000 in more than 200 transactions. It may send one for less. A business that pays you $2,000 or more in 2026 for services generally sends a Form 1099-NEC ($600 for payments before 2026).
Can I deduct miles driven to my first gig and back home?
Not if it's commuting. IRS Publication 463 says driving between your home and your main or regular place of work is a personal commuting expense, no matter how far. Trips from home to a temporary work location in the same business can be deductible. Keep a log of each trip's date, miles and business purpose.
Standard mileage rate or actual expenses?
If you qualify for both, the IRS suggests figuring your deduction both ways before choosing. To use the standard rate on a car you own, you must choose it in the first year you use the car for business; for a leased car, choosing the standard rate locks it in for the whole lease. Parking fees and tolls for business are deductible on top of either method.
When are 2026 estimated tax payments due?
April 15, 2026; June 15, 2026; Sept. 15, 2026; and Jan. 15, 2027. You generally must pay estimated tax if you expect to owe $1,000 or more after withholding. A W-2 job's withholding can cover gig income instead, through a new Form W-4.
