Captive lenders (the carmaker's own finance arm) often offer the low promotional APRs on new cars, banks and credit unions compete on used cars and refinancing, and subprime lenders charge more. Rising late payments at a lender can mean tighter approvals. Get a credit-union or bank preapproval before you visit the dealer so you can compare the dealer's offer.
