Michigan insurance complaints by company (2025)

Shopping for car or home insurance in Michigan? The state's insurance regulator, the Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS), counts the complaints people file about each insurer and divides by how much insurance the company sold in Michigan. That complaint ratio (complaints per $1 million of premium) lets big and small companies be compared: lower is better. All listed auto insurers together come to 0.13; homeowners insurers, 0.17. Below is every insurer on DIFS's 2025 auto and homeowners lists, with a lookup. We don't sell insurance or give quotes.

Sorted by premium, not by how good they are. “Not listed” in the 2024 column means DIFS's 2024 list had no company with exactly that name. A ratio covers one year of complaints only; it doesn't measure price, claims speed or financial strength.

About this data

  • Michigan policies only, calendar 2025 (2024 for the comparison column). Other states use different formulas, so a Michigan ratio can't be compared with another state's number.
  • DIFS says company names are current as of the report run date, typically 4-6 months after year-end, and may differ from the name during the report year.
  • DIFS: “The complaint information is not to be used as endorsement for marketing or advertising purposes.” We show it for consumer information only.
  • DIFS also publishes ratios for accident and health, life and annuity insurers, plus complaint reasons, for 2023-2025: DIFS complaint statistics.

FAQ

What is Michigan's insurance complaint ratio?

It's the number of complaints filed with the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) about an insurer, divided by the insurer's Michigan written premium in millions of dollars. A ratio of 0.10 means 1 complaint for every $10 million of premium. Lower means fewer complaints for the company's size.

How many auto insurance complaints did Michigan get in 2025?

DIFS counted 1,781 automobile complaints in 2025 across all companies. Its 2025 auto ratio list covers the 94 insurers with at least $1 million of Michigan premium: 1,720 complaints on $12.91 billion of premium, or 0.13 complaints per $1 million overall (our math).

How many homeowners insurance complaints did Michigan get in 2025?

DIFS counted 917 homeowners complaints in 2025. Its 2025 homeowners list covers 70 insurers: 870 complaints on $5.11 billion of premium, or 0.17 per $1 million overall (our math).

Does a complaint mean the insurer did something wrong?

Not necessarily. DIFS says its report does not indicate a finding of fault of either party; it counts complaints filed, taking into account how much business the company does in Michigan. DIFS also suggests comparing premiums, policy benefits, financial stability and service.

Why is a small insurer's ratio so high?

With little premium, a few complaints push the ratio up fast. DIFS doesn't list companies under $1 million of premium because those ratios are highly variable. We mark ratios based on fewer than 5 complaints as a small sample.

How do I file an insurance complaint in Michigan?

DIFS asks you to try to settle it with the insurer first. If that fails, file online with DIFS, or call 877-999-6442 (toll-free, Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.) to get a form by mail, email or fax. DIFS contacts the insurer for a written response and sends you a letter with its findings.

Do you sell insurance or give quotes?

No. VaultRubric doesn't sell insurance or provide quotes. This page republishes Michigan's official complaint figures.

Facts, not insurance advice. We don't sell insurance or provide quotes; confirm coverage and requirements with the insurer, an agent or your state insurance department.
